Zion National Park, UT - Someone once said this location was so high that only Angel's could land there. Angel's Landing is a must for any visitor to ZNP. It offer's the quintessential park view as well as offering bragging rights to anyone who dares to ascend the narrow sandstone fin leading to the top. This is not for the faint of heart, so if you don't think you can do it, be smart and stop at the upper staging area.
Angel's Landing is accessed from Stop 6 for The Grotto. Cross the street and the foot bridge over the Virgin River. Go left for the Emerald Pools and right for Angel's Landing. The trail is well maintained and wide enough for people to pass. It starts out with a gradual ascent and becomes increasingly steep until after the first set of switchbacks leading to Refrigerator Canyon.
Walter's Wiggles is the next set of switchbacks which are steep enough for steps. I don't think I've ever walked a steeper set of switchbacks in ramp format. Once you make it to the top you are presented with the option to continue up the backside of the fin to the top, or wait behind. Many start the final leg only to turn back once they realize the insanity of what they are doing.
Angel's Landing is reached via a series of foot-holds in the sandstone fin that becomes increasingly precarious the further you ascend. In some areas there are 1500 foot sheep cliffs on both sides only a couple of feet away. A sturdy chain is there for your safety in the most dangerous parts. It's totally doable, even with the two-way traffic, but those with acrophobia should think twice. I also wouldn't want to be responsible for a young child on this trail. Avoid it in the dark, high wind, snow and rain.
Once at the top, your fear of heights will likely be less intense because you will have acclimated yourself to it. There's plenty of space to sit and eat lunch and soak up the amazing view. The only location better would be Observation Point.
